Tim Chester - "Making Community Work: Humility"

I came across this thought provoking post from Tim Chester on humility. Well worth a read.

Together@Butlins Session 4 - Dave Devenish "The Neccessity of cross-cultural mission"

Dave Devenish continued his exploration of the life of Jesus in the Sunday morning session speaking from Luke chapter 4:14-30 - looking at the time when Jesus preached in the synagogue in Nazareth.

Here again are some of my notes and thoughts on Dave's message.

Dave explained that at the time of Jesus, Nazareth was a very Jewish community in the midst of a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural region - Galilee.

All through Old Testament history, Israel was meant to be a blessing to all nations (not geo-political entities but people groups). Jesus came as a both a representative of and embodiment of that blessing to all nations.

Jesus' mission was mis-understood by the Jews. On occassions non Jews more readily understood Jesus than the Jews. "God's grace is for all, and faith comes in surprising places."

"Great grace leads to great faith"

Dave spoke about Jesus's annointing and our annointing. "We are annointed because Jesus is the Messiah [the annointed one] and we have Jesus in us [as believers]." This annointing is for mission.

"Any teaching on annointing that does not have a missional emphasis misses the mark."

Dave spoke about Jesus' manifesto Luke 4:18.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

Luke 14:8 (ESV)

Dave also spoke about the apostle Paul's manifesto from Romans 1:5

through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,
Romans 1:5 (ESV)

We are to combine these together to get our mission. "Our mission is to bring glory to God everywhere. We have received grace and apostleship - authority to go to all nations to bring them to obedience of faith."

Paul had a passion for the unreached. He wanted to preach the gospel where it had not been preached before. "A passion for the gospel is a passion to go to the unreached."

Evangelism and transforming culture go hand in hand and are joined by the annointing and are part of God's heart for mission.

Variety is essential to glorify God. God is more glorified in variety than in uniformity [diverse multi-ethnic, multi-cultural churches reflect this]. "The scattering of the nations was ordained by God and for his glory. Acts 17:24-27 and Habbakuk 2:14.

"Without sending across cultures it is not possible to fully grasp the gospel. We need an outside witness" We need to be open to input from Christians from other nations as their worldview will be different and can challenge areas in ours that have been tainted and are no longer biblical "... Job of a preacher is to change worldview so we approach culture differently."

We need to adapt and adopt to our cultural surroundings without compromising the gospel - the apostle Paul "I have become all things to all men."

Hopefully these notes capture some of Dave's message. All of the messages from the weekend will be available on the Newfrontiers website soon. They are well worth listening to.

It was encouraging to see many respond after Dave's message on Sunday to a call to go to unreached peoples.

Together@Butlins Session 3 continued

Dave Devenish unpacked the parable of the great banquet from Luke 14 so well in his session on Saturday evening it is worthy of a second post to try to capture some more of what Dave said.

Here are some more of my notes from Dave's session:

"meals in the Bible are important as pictures of God's kingdom."

"70% [of people] learn from stories rather than lists of concepts."

"The Bible is an Eastern book and we need to understand it in the context of that culture."

I won't attempt to capture the way Dave unpacked things through stories here. At best I'll end up with a list summarising the stories Dave told. Here is the list of points he made towards the end of the message:

1. The Kingdom of God is not a burden but a banquet. We enter through tribulation but when we get there it is a feast. We live in the light of a future kingdom - the kingdom that is here and the kingdom that is to come. Dave also made a sub-point about how we can honour people more by visiting their homes (even if we do not have an appointment!).

2. There is no valid excuse for not getting involved in the Kingdom of God- the excuses in the parable are not valid, increase in silliness and are more and more of an insult to the host.

3. How far do our churches honour the poor, the weak and the disadvantaged.

4. Do we practice the upside down Kingdom of God? - James 2:1-4

5. It is an unbelivable honour to serve not an obligation.

6. We need to turn anger into grace.

Together@Butlins Session 3 - Dave Devenish "The Life of Jesus"

Dave Devenish started a two part message on "The Life of Jesus" yesterday evening.

Last night, Dave focussed on Jesus' parable of the great banquet from Luke 14:15-24. Dave spent most of the message explaining the cultural context to the parable - the back story in other words. Well worth downloading the message when it is available and having a listen!

To be continued . . .

Together@Butlins Session 2 David Stroud "The Message of Jesus"

Following on from Steve Tibbert's opening session on "The Supremacy of Christ," Dave Stroud spoke on "The Message of Jesus" from Mark chapter 1 and Acts chapter 1.

The main emphasis of Dave's session was that Jesus came to inaugurate the Kingdom of God in the here and now. Jesus' message then and our message now as churches and individuals should be the good news of the King and His Kingdom.

Dave passionately described how the Kingdom of God is to impact the spiritual (salvation), physical (healing), mental and emotional (deliverance from oppression), and social needs in our lives.

Dave spoke of three instructions or commandments that Jesus gave concerning the kingdom.

1. We are to seek the kingdom (Matthew 6:33)

2. Pray for the kingdom.

3. Receive the kingdom.

Again excellent teaching and worship this morning.

Together@Butlins main session 1 - "The Supremacy of Christ" Steve Tibbert

What a great way to open Together@Butlins: an excellent time of worship and Steve Tibbert (King's Church Catford) speaking on "The Supremacy of Christ" from Hebrews 1:1-4.

Steve made some great points:

"God speaks in numerous ways, the most supreme way is through His son Jesus Christ the Messiah."

"You have no choice over where you are born but Malachi is clear that Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem."

"Lift our eyes from the challenges of today and glimpse again the cosmic Christ, the God of eternity."

"Worship should flow out of an unlimited understanding of Christ. God is far greater and bigger than our understanding."

"Priorities of life flow out of true and ever increasing understanding of who Christ is and what He has done for us."

What a great opening session. Hopefully a great foretaste of what is come over the weekend.
